New or Recent Graduate Veterinarian – Smithton Veterinary Service, Tasmania

Smithton Veterinary Service has a position for a new or recent graduate at their long established and expanding dairy mixed practice in north-west Tasmania.

Smithton Veterinary Service is a predominantly cattle (dairy 75%, beef 5%) and small animals (20%) practice with the occasional sheep, goat, horse and wildlife seen as well.

The dairy work includes routine farm visits and emergency work, herd health programs, bull fertility testing, consultancy work (mastitis, reproduction and nutrition), lameness as well as manual and ultrasound pregnancy testing.

The position is for 80% large animal, 20% small animal working a 9-day fortnight.

There is a supportive team consisting of 9 veterinarians and 3 farm technicians with a range of veterinary experience. We have a good mix of senior, mid-level and newer graduate veterinarians with most our vets having worked in the clinic for at least 5 years.

Don’t know if you’re getting the most up to date support and advice? One of our vets Dr Matt Izzo is a registered cattle specialist and Dr Craig Dwyer is a go-to in Australia for bull testing and large herd management. All of our vets are happy to support and mentor all new additions to the clinic.

The on call 1: 8 – that means only 4 nights a month! We have a Tele-triage service – so you are not getting disturbed for non- emergencies! You don’t have to start on-call until you are ready – for most new grads this is usually around the 2-month mark. Once you’ve found your feet don’t worry because ALL vets have a designated backup vet on the weekend and for weeknights there is always another vet willing to help if required!

You will be working from a modern, spacious, purpose-built clinic which includes a whole office level upstairs.  We have some great toys to make our lives easier including two mobile tipper crushes, five portable ultrasounds, bull fertility testing equipment and an in-house blood analyser for large and small animals. We have all the usual small animal equipment including vet-tome (dental game changer!) bone plating gear and digital radiography. We pride ourselves in being very active in farmer education through the provision of seminars and courses, and also at a higher industry level with Dairy Australia.

Salary is generous for new graduates plus you will receive paid AVA membership, VSB registration fees, VIN, CVE and Plumbs App subscriptions plus access to an online text and journal library.

A decent car, mobile phone and relocation assistance are also part of the package.

We offer paid volunteer leave and maternity leave and plenty of other perks that come with being part of the Apiam family.

Opportunities across the Apiam clinics are encouraged, and we offer industry-leading internal training.  New graduates benefit from our Graduate Development Program which offers mentorship, small group support and hands-on workshops.

If you are an exceptional new graduate with a genuine interest in dairy cattle and want to join our team, we would love to hear from you.
